IE8 Slow to some SSL sites only when connected to domain.  Win 7 x64, Server 2008.
This is really bizzare. I have Win 7x64, using IE8. When I go to certain https websites - it is painfully slow. Firefox and Opera run lightening fast to same sites on same machine. When I use IE, same website crawls to non-use. However, if I take the machine off the domain (i.e. use a wireless connection), it is lightening fast. If I use any other machine on domain (non Win 7), it is fast. Something with NIC/IE8 possibly? This is driving me insane - it makes no sense. If it were an IE8 issue, then why does it work using a wireless connection. If it were a firewall or OS issue, then why does Firefox and Opera work. I tried uninstalling IE8 and reinstalling, no change. By the way, my wireless connection goes through the same firewall as domain, but on different NIC VLAN (we use ISA 2006). If firewall is the issue, then why do other OSs work? Also, IE7 on "XP mode" works fine on same machine.More info: IE8 on another machine using Win 7 x32 has same issue - slow on same SSL sites. This machine on same domain as above.Yet more info, tried yet another Win 7 x32 machine NOT on AD Domain (separate VLAN but same firewall) no issues. This is stupid confusing.

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Run the Internet Explorer to No Add-ons Mode and check if there are any add-ons conflicts: Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode How do browser add-ons affect my computer? 2. Reset Internet Explorer How to reset Internet Explorer settings 3. Check the issue with clean boot: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

No good - tried all 3 items. Note: this only happens on SOME ssl websites. I see that others have this issue and there is no resolution - did Microsoft do something to IE8 recently? I also took my LAN connection and moved it to another subnet, and behold - the issue went away. This other subnet goes through the same firewall as my "regular" VLAN. If I put it back on my regular VLAN (the one with Active Directory), the issue reappears. I even add the site in question to the Trusted Sites in IE 8 and there's no difference. Also, using IE in XP mode on same machine doesn't have the issue. There's a flaw in IE8 on Win 7 when connected to the domain. Perhaps a Group Policy thing. Anyone?

Hi, Thank you for your update. At this time, please also try the methods in the following Knowledge Base article: You cannot log in to or connect to secured Web sites in Internet Explorer Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Nicholas, I appreciate you trying to help, thank you. While I actually did what you recommended in this last post, I only did it to prove that I don't think my issue is fully being understood and these solutions are just standard troubleshooting ideas. If I take the same PC, and change how I connect to the Internet (i.e. change the external VLAN on the NIC to one that is not on the AD Domain), and all is fine, I can't possibly see how the issue is related to Compatibility Mode in IE. Also, your last suggestion is for those who "cannot log in or connect to secured Web sites in Internet Explorer". I CAN log in and connect fine on most SSL websites, only SOME I have issues where the connection is slow when the machine is connected to the Active Directory Domain. If I take the identical machine and move it to a Network VLAN that is not on the home Active Directory Domain, all SSL websites, including the problem ones, work fine. As a further test, I took another machine on the AD Domain, Windows 7, x32, when it was on the domain VLAN, and it also connected very slowly to the SSL website in question. However, I then removed the machine from the AD Domain, left it on the same domain VLAN, and the SSL website in question had no issues connecting at normal speed. I think there is an issue with Windows 7 (x32 and x64) on an AD Server 2008 Domain and certain SSL websites. As I have time, I may investigate the group policy.

Hello, I just got off the phone with MS. I had to pick up a golden ticket on this same issue. The answer was install SP2. Best I can tell, is that Office updates corrupt the Schannel.dll file. SP2 corrects the problem. Good Luck, Let me know if that helps. Robert
